Experience the Natural Wonders of the Great Bear Rainforest
Welcome to the Great Bear Rainforest….ย one of the last pristine coastal rainforests in North America. This immersive experience offers you the chance to photograph stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, and the vibrant colors of this unique ecosystem.
Take a deep breath and fill your body and soul with this breathtaking landscape rich in history and a conservation success story, thanks to its First Nations inhabitants.
Join wildlife photographer, Sarah Devlin, on this spectacular sailing adventure through the protected waters of the north central coast of Britishย Columbia โ an area known as the โGreat Bear Rainforestโ. This stretch of coastline is a rich and unique ecosystem ofย impressive biodiversity โ from herring, salmon, and large marine mammals in the sea, to carnivores, birds, and massiveย cedar and hemlocks trees on land. It is home to grizzly bears, wolves, humpback whales, eagles, and the elusive, all white Spirit Bear.ย ย
This natural history voyage will explore the famed Inside Passage, stretching along the reaches of the Great Bearย Rainforest, with the anticipation of seeing some amazing wildlife while enjoying the peace and tranquility of BCโsย central coast. Each day, we leave the vessel for small boat excursions, an exploratory paddle, or to discover what liesย ashore. We navigate along winding waterways and winding fjords beneath towering rock faces and rushing waterfallsย to remote estuaries where we hope to see large coastal grizzlies feeding on spawning salmon.ย ย
While underway, the best place to be is on deck. We keep a sharp eye out for whales and other marine mammals as weย steer through remote channels shrouded by old-growth forests of Sitka spruce, western red cedar, western hemlock,ย amabilis fir, and Douglas fir. Trees can tower up to 300 feet and grow for more than 1,500 years in this nitrogen-richย environment โ with some areas referred to as a โsalmon forestโ.ย ย
The Tsimshian, Haisla, and Heiltsuk First Nations people have lived in the area for tens of thousands of years. We willย learn about their culture and how important this remote and pristine wilderness is to them and their future generations.ย Conservationists and First Nations have been actively working to protect this area as it contains the largest remainingย untouched temperate rainforest on the Pacific Coast. In 2006, following the Great Bear Rainforest Agreement betweenย the British Columbia government, Coastal First Nations, the forestry industry, and environmental groups, 10% of theย Great Bear Rainforest was set aside for protection as conservancies.ย ย

Arrival into Terraceย
We highly recommend arriving in Terrace the day prior to the trip start and staying overnight at accommodation ofย your choice. This ensures the group departs on time as there can be unforeseen weather delays when travelling inย coastal regions. You can refer to the accommodation suggestions listed in this itinerary. Please note that we will beย picking guests up from select hotels the next morning โ see โDay 1โ for locations.ย ย
Terrace has many remnants of its industrious past, such as the Heritage Park Museum, the โOld Bridgeโ (Nationalย Historic Site of Canada), and the George Little House – the original founder of Terrace. You can view local art at theย Terrace Art Gallery and purchase indigenous art and gifts at the House of Sim-oi-Ghets. There are plenty of cafes, bars, and restaurants to sit down and eat at as well.ย
Shuttle from select hotels in Terrace to the MK Bay Marina in Kitimat are included in your trip fees. Any transportationย beyond this service is the responsibility of the guest.ย ย
Trip Start โ Day 1 (Sept. 21st)
Following breakfast, you will meet the rest of the group and shuttle driver from Kalum Kabs at one of the two pick-upย locations:ย
- Comfort Inn & Suitesย
- Holiday Inn Express & Suitesย
Expect the transfer to MK Bay Marina in Kitimat to take about 50 minutes. Once at the Marina you will be met by aย Bluewater Crew member at the top of the ramp to the docks. Upon boarding the vessel, cabins will be assigned andย following introductions and safety orientation we will set sail for the Great Bear Rainforest.ย ย
We will spend each evening in different and remote anchorages with wonderful views. During our daily shore or smallย boat excursions, our onboard naturalist will help identify different coastal plants, animals, birds, and marine life.ย Interested participants can help keep a species list for the trip. There will be time to explore the protected waters usingย our stable sea-kayaks.ย
Days 2 โ 3 (Sept. 22nd -23rd)
Heading south down Douglas Channel, keep your eyes trained on the shoreline for foraging bears and other wildlifeย while underway. We see a variety of birdlife throughout the region including bald eagles and the โtricksterโ ravens. Ifย weather and tides permit, a wander along remote beaches and wildlife trails will show evidence of bears and possiblyย wolves in the area.ย
As we explore the waters of southern Douglas Channel (Wright Sound, Squally Channel, and Whale Channel), and atย various other places along our journey, we expect to encounter humpback whales. We keep an eye out for large blowsย and hope to witness interesting behaviours like breaches, pectoral fin slaps, spy-hopping, and possibly bubble-netย feeding. We will take the time to observe these amazing, 15-metre-long creatures whenever the opportunity arises.ย
Fin whales have also been spotted more often in recent years and we hope to have luck in coming across these massiveย and speedy cetaceans. We also hope for chances to encounter other marine mammals like orca, porpoise, and Stellerย sea lions โ an inquisitive species that are expert, deep-water predators with lively haul-outs. If time allows, we will makeย a stop to visit local whale researchers to learn about their fascinating work.
Although we travel in protected waters with more limited sailing opportunities, we hope for a steady wind to set theย sails and enjoy the silence and serenity of nature. With a good low tide, we may also explore the shoreline for differentย species of colourful sea stars, anemone, and algae.ย
Day 4 (Sept. 24th)
As we travel along Princess Royal Island, we keep a close watch on the shoreline, since this is the best-known area forย seeing the rare Spirit (also known as Kermode) bear. We are fortunate to spend a day with local Gitgaโat First Nationย guides, who refer to the white bear as Moksgmโol. They will take us to their favourite bear viewing areas. With a littleย ย
patience, we hope to be lucky enough to see black bears and the elusive, all-white Spirit bear fishing for salmon atย quiet spawning streams hidden in the thick of the forest. These white bears are black bears expressing a geneticย variation resulting in about ten percent of the areaโs population having light coloured fur.ย ย
There may be an opportunity to visit Bishop Bay hot springs for a soothing soak in a unique setting amidst the eclecticย collection of fishing floats.ย
Days 5 โ 7ย (Sept. 25th -27th)
We keep watch for bears and coastal wolves along the shoreline to Khutze Inlet (Kโootz/Khutze Conservancy). Itsย beautiful river valley provides a rich estuary, and we hope for some good grizzly viewing at the waterโs edge. Spawningย salmon also attract a wide variety of coastal birds, such as belted kingfishers, American dippers, Bonaparte gulls,ย common mergansers, and mighty bald eagles.ย
We will voyage deep into the coastal mountains to explore a large provincial park called Fiordland Conservancy. Beneath towering granite cliff faces and impressive waterfalls, we will explore remote estuaries with the expectation ofย seeing grizzly bears attracted by the spawning salmon โ hopefully some have cubs in tow!ย
Time permitting, we may visit the Kitasoo/Xaiโxais First Nations village of Klemtu to see the ceremonial Big House thatย was recently built by the local community.ย
Day 8 โย (Sept. 28th) Trip Finish in Bella Bellaย
As we approach the waters of Milbanke Sound keep watch for sea otters. With the nuclear testing at Amchitka betweenย 1968 and 1972, 89 sea otters were transplanted to Vancouver Island. Some found their way to the central coast. Youย might spot them in the kelp beds wrapped in the leaves of kelp to anchor themselves against the currents. Althoughย sightings of these growing colonies have become more frequent, their population here is still considered vulnerableย and of special concern.ย
Our trip finishes in the small First Nations coastal town of Bella Bella. Located on remote Campbell Island, Bella Bella – also known as Waglisla – is the home of the Heiltsuk First Nation. Their traditional territory is spread out over 16,658ย square kilometers. Bella Bella a town of about 1450 residents is located 181km north of Vancouver Island and 144kmย west of Bella Coola and is only accessible by air or ferry/boat.ย
We will arrive at the Bella Bella Municipal Dock just before noon in time to catch the afternoon Pacific Coastal flight toย Vancouver, BC.ย ย
Here you will be met by Bella Shuttle and transported to the airport. Shuttle transportation from Bella Bella Municipalย Dock to Bella Bella Airport is included in your trip fees.
