Join acclaimed wildlife photographer Emily Carter for this three day shorebird photography workshop at Nickerson Beach, NY.

Nickerson Beach in New York is a fantastic location for shorebird photography because of its diverse bird population and accessibility.  Many species nest on the beach including:

  • Piping Plovers
  • American Oystercatchers
  • Black Skimmers
  • Least and Common Terns

Topics that will be covered include:

  •    Essential elements of bird photography.
  •    Understanding and seeing light and how it affects your subject.
  •    Birds in flight photography techniques.
  •    Capturing behaviors and telling a story with your images.
  •    Using low light for creative blurs with bird photography.

About your leader…

Emily J. Carter is an award-winning and published conservation photographer. Her work has been seen in solo artist exhibits, juried art shows, and in published print including magazines, books and newspapers.
She is a seasoned international traveler fluent in English and Spanish. With a corporate background in Human Resources and extensive years in the travel and hospitality industry, she holds a master’s degree in Global Management. Her photographic journey began when she was a teenager and has always enjoyed photography as a way of connecting to the world around her.
Emily’s passion for photography has been shared in a wide variety of nature photography classes in the Metro Washington D.C. area for the past decade. She has juried photography contests and offered presentations through camera clubs and Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions (formally Nature Visions.)
Through her work Nature as Art, she brings a creative interpretation of the natural world, and her images express a sense of serenity with profound stillness and ethereal attributes.

ITINERARY

NICKERSON BEACH WORKSHOP

July 8th -11th, 2026

Day 1

Emily will pick the group up at 1:00 pm at John F. Kennedy International Airport.  After check in at our hotel and dropping luggage the group will meet at 3:30 for an early dinner at The Pantry Diner.  At 5:30 pm we depart for the beach for a sunset session then return to the hotel at approximately 8:30 pm.

Day 2 -3 

4:30 a.m. Depart for Sunrise with coffee/bagel stop. We get to the beach for a sunrise session before returning to the hotel in time for a late breakfast.

2:00 pm – optional photo review session in the dining area of the hotel.

4:00 p.m. Depart for early dinner at Golden Reef Diner or Pete’s Clam Bar.

5:30 p.m. – depart for Nickerson Beach Park for an evening session. Return to hotel after sunset at approximately 8:30 pm. 

Day 4 

4:30 a.m. – Depart for Sunrise with coffee/bagel stop at Long Island Bagel Café. 

5:30 am sunrise session.

Return to (JFK) at approximately 10:00 am for flights out.

ACTIVITY LEVEL

Easy, there will be short walks on the beach.  You will be lying in a prone position for extended periods of time.
