Join acclaimed wildlife photographer Emily Carter for this three day shorebird photography workshop at Nickerson Beach, NY.
Nickerson Beach in New York is a fantastic location for shorebird photography because of its diverse bird population and accessibility.ย Many species nest on the beach including:
- Piping Plovers
- American Oystercatchers
- Black Skimmers
- Least and Common Terns
Topics that will be covered include:
- ย ย Essential elements of bird photography.
- ย ย Understanding and seeing light and how it affects your subject.
- ย ย Birds in flight photography techniques.
- ย ย Capturing behaviors and telling a story with your images.
- ย ย Using low light for creative blurs with bird photography.
About your leader…
July 9th – 12th, 2025
Day 1 (July 9th)
Emily will pick the group up at 1:00 pm at John F. Kennedy International Airport.ย After check in at our hotel and dropping luggage the group will meet at 3:30 for an early dinner at The Pantry Diner.ย At 5:30 pm we depart for the beach for a sunset session then return to the hotel at approximately 8:30 pm.
Day 2 -3 (July 10th-11th)
4:30 a.m. Depart for Sunrise with coffee/bagel stop. We get to the beach for a sunrise session before returning to the hotel in time for a late breakfast.
2:00 pm – optional photo review session in the dining area of the hotel.
4:00 p.m. Depart for early dinner at Golden Reef Diner or Pete’s Clam Bar.
5:30 p.m. โ depart for Nickerson Beach Park for an evening session. Return to hotel after sunset at approximately 8:30 pm.ย
Day 4 (July 12th)
4:30 a.m. โ Depart for Sunrise with coffee/bagel stop at Long Island Bagel Cafรฉ.ย
5:30 am sunrise session.
Return to (JFK) at approximately 10:00 am for flights out.

Easy, there will be short walks on the beach.ย You will be lying in a prone position for extended periods of time.
Camera Gear:
- Digital camera (second body if available) with extra batteries and memory cards.
- Tripod with gimbal head.
- Lenses include:
- Telephoto lens for wildlife. 100-400mm or 100-500mm lens
- Laptop with external hard drive and memory card readers for on-site image backup.
