Grimsey’s breathtaking landscapes, from rugged cliffs teeming with seabirds to serene, grassy expanses overlooking the ocean provide the perfect backdrop for photographing Puffins. We’ll have the best vantage points for capturing close-ups, flight shots, and unique behaviors like their comical takeoffs and landings. Grimsey Island hosts a thriving puffin colony during the breeding season, typically from late spring to early autumn. Thousands of these iconic seabirds nest along the island’s dramatic cliffs, offering photographers plenty of opportunities to capture their vibrant colors and charming behaviors.
Situated within the Arctic Circle, Grimsey Island offers unique lighting conditions, especially during the summer months when the midnight sun bathes the island in soft, golden hues. This extended daylight is ideal for capturing puffins at various times of the day, giving photographers more flexibility and opportunities. Golden hour sessions allow you to harness the soft Arctic light, creating stunning compositions. Beyond puffins, you’ll encounter other seabirds, such as guillemots and kittiwakes, as well as the occasional Arctic Fox.
Grimsey Island is not only Iceland’s premier destination for bird photography but also offers a unique and tranquil experience, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of this remote Arctic Circle. location. We will have quaint accommodations on the island with a guesthouse all to ourselves and meals served at the islands only restaurant. This promises to be a peaceful and creative getaway

JUNE 23RD – 30TH, 2026
Day 1 (June 23rd)
We will meet at Reykjavik Airport to board our domestic flight to Akureyi International Airport (included). You will need to take a taxi (about 45 mins, not included) to Reykjavik Airport from Keflavik Airport (KEF) where your flights into Iceland will arrive.
Upon arrival at Akureyi International Airport (AEY) our guide will pick us up and transfer us to Akureyi Hotel for the night.
Day 2 (June 24th)
This morning we will be picked up at our hotel and driven to the town of Dalvik where we will board a ferry to Grimsey. The crossing is about three hours. Once we arrive, we will be driven to our guesthouse and settle in. Depending on what time we arrive and light and weather conditions, we will have a late afternoon photography session with the Puffins.
Day 3 – 6 (June 25th-28th)
We will have five full days of photographing Puffins on the island. We should get all different kinds of light and weather conditions, the daily schedule will depend much on these two factors. the island is small but still requires a 4×4 vehicles to get around in. Some days we will be photographing Puffins close to our guesthouse and other days our guide will take to other locations on the island.
Day 7 (June 29th)
We will have most of the morning to photograph Puffins then we will depart to take the ferry back to Dalvik. Our guide will transport us to Akureyi Hotel for the night.
Day 8 (June 30th)
We will be picked up at our hotel in the morning and transported to Akureyi Hotel for flights out.

JUNE 23RD – 30TH, 2026
Cancellations are only effective upon WIWP receiving a written cancellation notification, signed by the client. Deposits and payments are used to secure and pay for the client’s accommodations, transportation, guides, internal flights and all aspects of the client’s trip and are non-refundable.
We understand that conflicts arise, so if you need to cancel and if WIWP fills your spot at full price prior to the due date of the final payment, a refund, less a 20% administration fee and
less any non-refundable air tickets purchased, single supplement, etc. may be issued; however, there are no guarantees. We strongly recommend purchasing trip insurance, in most cases this will be your only opportunity to recoup non-refundable fees.
In the event a client fails to join a safari/tour/workshop, join it after departure or leave it prior to its completion, no tour fare refund will be made. Some airfare may be non-refundable and WIWP is not responsible for providing a refund for any penalties or non-refundable airfare. There will be no refunds from WIWP for any unused portions of the tour. The above policy applies to all travel arrangements made via WIWP.
CHANGE IN TOUR/WORKSHOP:
WIWP will make every attempt to operate a safari/tour/workshop once confirmed, but will reserve the right to cancel and/or change a trip at our sole, reasonable discretion at any time due to insufficient bookings, unsafe or undesirable travel conditions for the participants and/or reasons beyond its control, such as: strikes, wars, acts of God, acts of government, civil unrest or any other cause whatsoever, that may make operation of the tour impossible, illegal, or inadvisable.
In the event that WIWP changes or postpones the date(s) or itinerary of any safari/tour/workshop due to any reason set forth above, then no refund shall be due to the client.
In the event that WIWP cancels the tour, then all tour payments received from the client shall be refunded, and said refund will be the limit of WIWP’s liability. WIWP is not responsible for any expenses incurred by clients in preparing for the trip, including non-refundable or penalty-carrying airline tickets, special clothing, visa or passport fees, or other tour-related expenses.

Easy, we will be walking short distances on flat surfaces for the most part. You may be moving over rugged terrain to get in position for photography.
