SEA WOLF CAMP EXPEDITION
APR. 15TH - 22ND, 2026
Just Added
Vancouver Island is a haven for wildlife photographers. Discover stunning landscapes brimming with diverse plant and animal life, from majestic sea wolves to lively sea otters. This expedition will take you to secluded spots rarely visited, providing an unparalleled opportunity to connect with nature. Every moment in this unspoiled environment showcases the untamed beauty of the coastal wilderness, making it an ideal setting for capturing breathtaking photographs.
Participants should be ready for a true coastal wilderness camping adventure, embracing the unpredictability of both wildlife and weather. Tenting arrangements may vary based on the location and time of year. The base camp, featuring an 800-square-foot building, often serves as a starting point for excursions. Frequently, wildlife activity is accessible within walking distance, but at times, the wolves guide us to more remote areas where we set up a beach camp.
Weather conditions can range from hot and sunny to cool and rainyโsometimes all in one day. A detailed packing list will be provided to ensure you’re well-prepared.

ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย Frequently Asked Questions:
- How close do the wolves come? In general most encounters are 90m plus and usually a few times a year we may meet an inquisitive or curious wolf or wolves who choses to come very close.
- What lenses should I bring? Bring a range of lenses, but long lenses are a must. You should favour fast glass for low light situations and be able to carry your full backpack on forest trails for up to 1 hour at a time.
- Should I bring a tripod? If you like tripods, yes.
- Can I bring a drone? Yes, but your guide will advise you on when and how itshould, or should not be used.
- Do you use blinds? Often, especially through the off season, and when theweather is inclement. If the weather is good, wearing earth tones and tucking into the forest edge or within a the shoreline is also very effective. The use of blinds is situational, and we always have them on hand, should we need/want them.
- Do I really need waders? For getting in and out of the boat waders are better than rubber boots, and waders will allow you to extend your time in the field against the movements of the tide. Rubber boots are manageable, but waders are recommended and open the door to more opportunities.
- Have you ever not seen wolves on a tour? In 5 years weโve missed on 2 occasions. Considering how challenging sea wolves are to see, we are very proud of our track record and work extremely hard to offer reliable trips.
- Will we see other wildlife? Yes, we have very reliable sea otters and mink at our base camp, black bears are common. There can be excellent opportunities to photograph sea otters on all of our trips. Most of the large birds in the area are very skittish, but the smaller shore birds will often put on a show. Generally if we are focused on wolves, we tend not to see a lot of other wildlife activity.
- Have you ever felt threatened by a wolf or bear, and used your bear spray? No and no. With 20 years of bear and wolf guiding experience, we have never needed to unholster a bear spray. We do have many stories to share though!
10. Do I really need rain gear on summer trips? Yes, the climate on the West side of Vancouver Island can vary drastically over the course of a trip. On a cold rainy August day the temperature could drop to 10 degrees celsius, and a few days later sore to 35 degrees celsius.
- Is there a shower? Yes, assuming we have sufficient water reserves available.
- Is the water portable? We bring in residential drinking water, and use rainwatercollected off the roof for dishes.
13. Is there cell service? No, but we do have radios and satellite messaging devices
available for emergencies, or if you need to send a message home.
14. Is there a way to charge batteries? Yes, we provide a 1000 watt generator which
provides ample power for all charging needs.
15. Tips? Your crew works extremely hard to provide you the opportunity to photograph
wolves, tips are always appreciated. 5-10% is common, and cash is preferred.
