Join acclaimed wildlife photographer Emily Carter for an unforgettable bird photography workshop in the lush cloud forests of Mindo, Ecuador—one of the world’s premier birding destinations. Based at a specialized bird photography lodges, this immersive experience is designed to maximize your opportunities to capture stunning images of the region’s vibrant avian life.

Each day will include guided outings to nearby hotspots, where you’ll photograph a dazzling array of tropical birds, including toucans, tanagers, hummingbirds, and more. Emily will provide hands-on instruction and personalized guidance to help you refine your technical skills and artistic vision, whether you’re a passionate beginner or a seasoned hobbyist.

With comfortable single room  accommodations, expert local guides, and an itinerary built around photography-first access, this workshop offers the perfect balance of learning, inspiration, and adventure.

About your leader…

Emily J. Carter is an award-winning and published conservation photographer. Her work has been seen in solo artist exhibits, juried art shows, and in published print including magazines, books and newspapers.
She is a seasoned international traveler fluent in English and Spanish. With a corporate background in Human Resources and extensive years in the travel and hospitality industry, she holds a master’s degree in Global Management. Her photographic journey began when she was a teenager and has always enjoyed photography as a way of connecting to the world around her.
Emily’s passion for photography has been shared in a wide variety of nature photography classes in the Metro Washington D.C. area for the past decade. She has juried photography contests and offered presentations through camera clubs and Mid-Atlantic Photo Visions (formally Nature Visions.)
Through her work Nature as Art, she brings a creative interpretation of the natural world, and her images express a sense of serenity with profound stillness and ethereal attributes.

ITINERARY

JAN. 30TH - FEB. 6TH, 2026

Day 1 (Jan. 30th)

Airport pick up and arrival to Quito, Rincon de Puembo Hotel

Day 2 (Jan. 31st)

Depart Rincon de Puembo 8:00 am and drive to Birwatcher’s House.  Stop at Mitad del Mundo for tour.  Lunch enroute at Mirador Guaycapi, on to Birdwatcher’s for check in and dinner. Orientation and photo set up discussion with Emily.

Day 3 (Feb. 1st)

Breakfast at Birdwatcher’s House.  Time with Emily in blinds and stations. After lunch depart for Sendero Fruiti tour. Dinner at Birdwatcher’s House.

Day 4 (Feb. 2nd)

Breakfast at Birdwatcher’s. Mindo for Chocolate tour in the morning. Lunch and dinner at Birdwatcher’s.  Evening multi-flash Hummingbird session.

Day 5 (Feb. 3rd)

Breakfast at Birdwatcher’s House then depart for Mashpi Amagusa Reserve for photography sessions. Lunch at Sacha Watusa.  Dinner at Birdwatcher’s.

Day 6 (Feb. 4th)

Depart Birdwatcher’s for Rincon de Puembo Hotel. Three stops…Mindo Cloud Forest Foundation, Los Armadillos, Marasacha Reserve.

Day 7 (Feb. 5th)

Return to airport for flights out.

  • Two zoom sessions: one pre-workshop for preparation and orientation, and one post-workshop for Image Review and Editing.
